Accentuation

Accent falls on the penultimate syllable unless that syllable is shortotherwise on the antepenultimate. The length of the antepenultimatesyllable is irrelevant.

Of course if there are only two syllables then the accent must fall onthe first.

Syllable length

Syllables are long if they contain a long vowel or a double vowel(diphthong) or if the vowel precedes two consonant sounds (includingdoubled consonants).

Note that some letters count as two consonants even though written asone (x) while some count as one even though they are written as two characters (ch, ph, th).
